Task 1
In-camera techniques![]() |
This was shot by taping a stack of two lenses to onto a iPhone 4's camera: a red filter intended for a night-vision-friendly pocket flashlight (i.e. a cheap red translucent piece of plastic) and a small magnifying lens cannibalized from a busted pair of binoculars.

This shot was taken by using a filter made from the plastic lens out of a pair of novelty glasses that was then mounted onto a piece of black matte board and then just held up in front of the camera lens

This was shot using three different types of filters- a ND filter, a glass fiilter, and this bokeh filter. The bokeh filter cut out of black construction paper, by hand, and taped it to the UV filter
-The Bokeh effect is simply in an out of focus image, the blurred part. Whatever the bokeh filter shape is becomes the blurred out of focus drops of light, projecting the filter shape into the aperture.

This was shot with black lace panties over the lens.

An example of the bokeh effect being used in a different circumstance, other than photography, is in the film 'Scott Pilgram Vs. The World'. Look closely at the street lights around 1.25 into the clip. Again this technique is used to set the atmosphere, and give you an insight to how the character is feeling.
Another example of in camera tequniques used in other that photography is in the film Labyrinth.
Task 2
Test Images
All three photographs where with a homemade filter. The first two images where taken using cling film colored with red marker on one side, and then fitted over the lense. The last image was again taken with cling film, but with a lipstick kiss mark in the middle of it, and again fitted over the lense.
These five photographs where taking using a homemade lense made out of cling film. Starting from the first to the last image the cling film encloses more and more into the center of the lense untill theres nothing more than a small hole.
Task 3
Modern Techniques
Fish eye lense effect using photoshop-http://www.marcofolio.net/photoshop/create_a_fish_eye_lens_effect_in_photoshop.html
- First, make your selection of your fish eye view with the Elleptical Marquee Tool (M). Hold down the "Shift" key while selecting, so that you'll keep the circle perfectly round. The selection is the most important part to get a good Fish-eye effect. Most of the distortion will be at the edges and lots of emphasis on the center, so anchor the middle with something interesting.
- Inverse your selection by going to Select > Inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I). Now press "Delete". Now you've narrowed down your image to your Fish-eye lens. Reverse your selection (Shift+Ctrl+I) to get your selection back to the Fish-eye lens.
- While still selected, Crop the image by going to Image > Crop. With this done, you should only have your Fish-eye lens as your image.
- The Fish-eye view is one of the standard filters in Photoshop. With your selection still on, go to Filter > Distort > Spherize. This will bring out a pop-up window with the spherize settings. Set the amount to 100% and the Mode to Normal. Now press "OK" and let Photoshop do his thing.
Create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) and (if you have deselected) (Ctrl + Click) the small thumbnail in the layers panel of the previous layer. Fill this new layer with black and change its opacity to 30%. Press (Ctrl + E) to merge the layers.

- Create a new file (New>File) with the following details and create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N).
- Draw some Bokeh circles with the above setting and change the opacity of the layer to 30%.
- Select the layer and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Add the blur with radius 5px.
Create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). Select your brush and change the size to 91px. Draw some Bokeh circles on the new layer.

Add Gaussian Blur to this layer with 3px radius.
- Select the previous layer and add Gradient Map (Image>Adjustments>Gradient Map) or (Windows>Adjustments>Gradient Map) as shown below.

Task 4
Test Images
Vigenette
When creatign the vigenette effect I started off by adding a new layer to the image and then making the photograph compleatly black by clicking the 'fill' tool.
I then started making the actual effect by going to the 'BRUSH' tool and selecting the ciruclar 'BRUSH' then changing the size to a regularly large on eon the hardness to 5%.
I then went to the erase tool and slowly started taking away the black from the center just leaving a shadow arounf the outside of the image.
Gaussian Blur
When I did the gaussian blur effect I decided to also keep the vigenette effect aswell.
To create the gaussian blur I added a new layer then went to fliter >blur >gaussian blur >radious 40.6
I then used the 'erase' tool and slowly rubbed out the center of the photograph leaving the outside only with the effect.
Mid black and white
I created the mid black and white effect by firstly changing the image to black and white, I did this by going to image >adjustment >black and white. I then played with the colors until it was happy with the outcome.
I then went to layers and changed the opacity to 50%
Smudge
When i created the smudge effect I went onto the ???? tool and seleted the smudge tool. I then used this all over the image untill I was happy with the outcome.
Task 5
Replicate 3 in-camera techniques
I adore the effects that all these home made filters have on the images. I find it fascinating thats such simple objects have such an impact on the outcome of the photographs.

The expected challange of getting my cat involved in this shoot was non-existant. She sat perfectly throughout almost aware and posing for the camera.
When doign this again I would hope for a more solid and apparent bokeh effect with also more to the image, more background and occurrence.

I decided to replicate this photograph because I love the strange blurred effect that this filter gives. It is made out of the bottom of a bottle cut off and a small hole pierced in the bottom of it to make a view for the lens. I would have never thought of using something so simple and blatent untill seeing this image.
The making of the filter itself was quite a job and very time consuming, due to the strenghth and thickness of the plastic. The piercing of the hole proved most difficult.

I decided to copy this image because it fascinated me that something as random as cheese cloth can be used as a filter. The airy innocent effect also drew me to using this and the fact that it is so simple shows you dont have to go to great lengths to created soemthing different. I made the filter very basically by cutting some cheese cloth that would fit snuggly around my lens.
I am nither pleased or dissapointed in the way my image turned out, I feel it is slightly over exposed which lets it down but once again I prefer it to the original image, as I feel it portrays the atmosphear that the filter creates.
